Is It Just Me?
shaun February 4, 2013

Watching a little boy waving frantically at a train as it pulled away from the station, I knew instantly what he was doing. I knew that he probably thought the train has thoughts and feelings. Let’s face it so many children’s books contain stories where inanimate objects are alive. Its just a natural reaction for him to speak to the departing train and wave it goodbye.

Do you still have these thoughts? I don’t mean talk to trains. That would be a little odd. Do you lift an item of clothing off its shop display and hear it saying, “Please take me home. Don’t let the scruffy smelly bloke beside you buy me. He won’t take care of me and I don’t want to end up another rag on his messy floordrobe”.

No?  Is it just me then?

Do you ever think that an object deserved better? I had this irrational thought yesterday while sat in the fabulous ‘Folly’ bar on Gracechurch Street in London. While having a quiet drink and engaging in a favourite past time of people watching, it occurred to me that the bottle of bubbly moving quickly past me in the tight grip of a fellow drinker had been on an incredible journey.

The vine had been tended and nurtured and despite enduring temperature changes and insect attacks had still produced fruit that had grown, swollen and ripened to award winning perfection before being carefully harvested. Then been driven quickly to a processing plant where the grapes had been carefully pressed and fermented. The resultant liquid being lovingly matured into a premium quality product to be revered, savoured and enjoyed. It was placed in a thoughtfully designed, engineered container that was transported half way around the world where by the sheer luck of logistical supply; it lands up in a fridge in a bar in central London. Then the fickle finger of fate sees it being purchased and guzzled without thought or reflection by a huge intoxicated human whale… It deserved better.

Ok. So it’s just me then. Nurse, the appliance please…
